In the Parish of Traprain, young people are always welcome to participate fully in the life of our congregation. Every Sunday morning, provision is made for them to worship with us at Stenton and Prestonkirk. Children who have been baptised are eligible to receive the Sacrament under the discretion of their parents. Sunday School, J-Team, Holiday Clubs, Workshops and Craft Activity Sundays ensure that children are nurtured in the faith in a vibrant and vital way appropriate to their age and development.
Prestonkirk Sunday School
The Sunday School meets from August to June except on school holidays. On these Sundays, children are invited to participate in an act of worship for all ages or activities related to the theme of the service.
Children may join the Sunday School when they are three years old or approaching this age. They graduate from the Sunday School when they complete their Primary School education. They are divided into three age groups and follow a syllabus prepared by Scripture Union – Bubbles (preschool), Splash (Primaries 1-3) and Xstream (Primaries 4-6).
We have a team of twelve teachers, four for each section of the Sunday School, working together in pairs every week. The leaders are Fiona Byrnes (Bubbles), Alison Barker (Splash) and Chloe Clark (Xstream).
The Sunday School participates in our worship every Sunday and makes a distinctive contribution on special occasions throughout the year – Harvest Thanksgiving, Gift Service, Nativity Play, Mothering Sunday, Pentecost, Prize-Giving etc. There is always a Christmas Party, a Summer Picnic and Prize-Giving.
Children are invited to participate in our Attendance Award Scheme. For Session 2011/12, six children were awarded gold medals for attaining seven or less absences and 11 children were awarded certificates for gaining 30 or more attendances. This represented 43% of the Sunday School.
In addition, we have a small group for P7-S1 which is being run alongside Xstream. This is called ‘The Grid’.
Visit our Sunday School page to find out more about what we have been doing.
At Prestonkirk, creche facilities are available for under threes in the Smeaton Room at the back of the gallery. Parents are free to entertain their children there during the service as the need arises.
